This month’s Music Up Close takes a look back at artists of the 60s and 70s and see what some of them are doing today. There are, of course, too many to chose from, but some recent releases helped me narrow the focus for this column. Main Stage features Gordon Lightfoot recently toured in my region. Back Stage offers a look at the Velvet Underground in a visually stunning new book by Jim De Rogatis. The Studio brings CD a review of a previously unreleased recording by the late Jim McPherson.

Lindsey Vonn was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on 10/18/1984. Her hometown, however, is Vail Colorado which is where she got her start in skiing. She has been skiing for a total of nine years, and has claimed titles both as a junior and upon reaching adulthood as well. Lindsey Vonn is one of very few four event world class ski races. Not only did she win World Cup titles in overall and downhill, but she is also the only American skier ever to win at the Trofeo Topolino in Italy, earning junior Wor

[Megafaun group shot by D.L. Anderson]Durham, North Carolina’s Megafaun have been no strangers to Twin Cities concert goers over the past few years, playing shows at what seems like half the area’s venues. While many of the gigs have been opening for other bands, tonight’s show at the Cedar Cultural Center will find Megafaun with top billing. Due in part to their excellent sophomore album, Gather Form and Fly, Megafaun has seen an increasing level of recognition as the band continues to explore

Photos courtesy of Skinnyski and Julie . As a ‘professional’ mountain bike racer wannabe, most people would not believe that DSM is actually a great place to live. We have access to some of the best mountain bike racing in the nation. Just about every surrounding state has a mountain bike racing series and we’ve been able to race somewhere every weekend, all within a days drive. So last weekend, Julie and I packed up the Jeep and made the long drive up to Mapelag Resort in the wester

What to Bring for a Holiday Vacation You might be planning out your Holiday vacation as early as now, what with the rush for shopping and the apparent shortage of nice hams on the day itself. You might also be looking for ways to turn your Holiday vacation into something that is much more memorable, much more meaningful, and certainly more than a big meal with lots to eat and nothing to think about. You may be looking for a Holiday vacation that you will remember but not spend too much money o

Well, I’ve been off fishing and MORE! Doug and I drove from Knoxville, Tennessee up to International Falls, Minnesota, where we met up with my parents, their friends, and my sister. We all piled into two cars with our outdoor gear and sleeping bags and some food and headed up into northern Ontario, to Ear Falls, where we stayed the night at Gawley’s Little Beaver Lodge . From there, we were flown in a teeny tiny little plane that ended up landing on a remote lake* — leaving us to fend for o

My kids have grown up on a farm, so they can distinguish a tractor from a combine, a baler from a swather, a barn from a silo, and so on. Because farming is part of their heritage on both sides of the family, we’ve also tried to show them how farming was done in their grandparents’ and great-grandparents’ days. Photos of early tractors, grandfathers’ memories of farming with tractors, exploring the old barn: these are a part of my kids’ family history. Perhaps one of the most exciting
